The 2026 calendar

A pattern, not a promise.

No dates are announced for 2027. The 2026 calendar is the only pattern we have, so treat it as a guide and nothing more.
  1. 25 May 2026

    Call opens

Filmmakers, artists and studios register their work. Registration is free.

  2. 7 Sep 2026

    Call closes

Entries then go through a technical and eligibility check. Later entries were left to the judges' discretion.

  3. 15 Sep 2026

    Official selection

An international commission names the selection, which is announced publicly.

  4. 1 Oct 2026

    Festival opens

Opening night in Astana, with screenings and discussions.

  5. 3 Oct 2026

    Awards ceremony

The festival awards are presented. When this guide was written, winners were not yet public.

What each award rewards

Five awards, five ways to win.

AAIFF publishes no scoring grid. It does say what each Open Competition award is for, and that is the closest thing to criteria. Each of the five goes to a single quality.
  • Best Character

For a memorable and compelling character, whatever its form or origin. Give the lead a want, a flaw and a face that holds from the first shot to the last. With AI, consistency is part of the craft.

  • Best Direction

For outstanding direction, pacing and control of the film as a whole. One hand must show: rhythm, framing and restraint across every scene.

  • Best Visual

For a distinctive and cohesive visual language, atmosphere and style. A palette, a lens and a light you can describe in one sentence, held from start to end.

  • Best Story

For strong storytelling, narrative structure and emotional impact. The screenplay decides it: a clear want, a real obstacle and an ending that costs something.

  • Best Concept

For an original, thought-provoking or visionary idea. Describe your film in one sentence that nobody else could have written.

The Thematic prizes follow another logic: the Grand Prize goes to the strongest film in the main competition, the second to outstanding artistic achievement, the third to originality and cinematic voice. The festival publishes no weights.

Who decides

Five jurors from film, culture and tech.

The festival names five jurors for 2026. Film, culture and technology each have a seat, so a film must work for people who weigh them differently. The 2027 jury is not announced.
  • Balaji Srinivasan

Former CTO of Coinbase and former general partner at a16z. With Network School, he also hand-picks the projects that receive the $1,000,000 production fund. Show what your film could become next, not only what it is.

  • Audrey Azoulay

Former Director-General of UNESCO and former French Minister of Culture. Expect a cultural lens on a film's human stake and its place in the world.

  • Ma Ping and Wang Hao

Ma Ping, of China Film Studio, and Wang Hao, of the Beijing Film Academy, bring a film-institution view of craft, structure and direction. A clean beginning, middle and end reads across languages.

  • Li Long, BytePlus

General Manager of BytePlus for MEA, India, Turkiye and CIS. The festival imposes no tool, and asks for the models and pipeline to be disclosed. Disclose them honestly.

The two competitions

One film in one competition, or in both.

Films can enter both competitions, each entry registered separately. The Thematic Competition is for films that answer the annual theme, and the Open Competition takes any film. Which one fits yours, with the angle we would take.
  • 01

    Thematic Competition

3,138 films in 2026, on the theme The Future Worth Living In. Prizes of $450,000, $200,000 and $100,000. Films must be created within the eligibility period.

A future worth living in is a claim, and a claim needs a cost. Show what someone gave up or fought for to reach it. The annual theme may change for 2027.

  • 02

    Open Competition

4,929 films in 2026, any theme or approach, completed works and films shown elsewhere included. Five awards of $50,000.

Five awards, each for one quality. A film does not need to be perfect: it needs one thing nobody else did, a character, a look or an idea.

  • 03

    Entering both

Each entry is registered separately, and the Thematic one must be new and on theme.

Make a film on the theme, then register it twice if it also stands alone. Do not stretch an old film to fit the theme: the Open section exists for it.

The first edition

What 8,067 films tell us.

AAIFF's first call drew 8,067 films from 125 countries and regions: 4,929 in the Open Competition and 3,138 in the Thematic Competition. Winners are due on 3 October 2026. They were not yet public when this guide was written.

  1. 01

The odds are about one in nine hundred. Nine cash awards for 8,067 films. Aim to be that film, and make something worth the effort whatever happens.

  2. 02

The two sections are equally hard. About a thousand films per award in each: 3,138 films for three Thematic prizes, 4,929 for five Open awards.

  3. 03

The average film runs about ten minutes. The entries add up to more than 80,000 minutes, and the longest runs 4 hours 3 minutes. Three minutes is the minimum. A tight film stands out in a long queue.

  4. 04

1,189 films arrived in the last 24 hours. That is about one in seven. Submit early and leave the final hours to the crowd.

  5. 05

The host country sent 829 films, second after the United States with 1,396. India followed with 705, then China, South Korea and the United Kingdom. A film from anywhere competes with every country at once.

A character to watch

Lost Garden: a knight, six shots.

Best Character is one of five $50,000 awards. This is the opening of Lost Garden, episode 2, an animated series made by the ScreenWeaver team with Seedance, built around a newborn knight whose inner light is leaking away: the screenplay page, then each shot as a storyboard frame and as the final image.

Logline. A newborn knight whose inner light is leaking away crosses a world that has stopped hoping, to find the one blacksmith who can seal his armor.

INT. UNDERGROUND CAVERN - LOWER PATH - CONTINUOUS

Blue mushrooms the size of houses. LANTERN, a small knight with a lantern for a helm, walks alone.

He presses a hand to his chest. Sparks of light slip between his fingers.

SERRURE

Hold on. You're losing something.

Serrure lifts the edge of the cloak. A gash in the armor. Blue light leaks out like smoke.

SERRURE

That's your energy. What keeps you standing.

He grips Lantern's shoulder. Two knights alone among the crystals.

SERRURE

A suit that leaks goes out. Eventually.

Under the giant mushrooms, the road climbs into the dark.

SERRURE

So. We follow the road.

Serrure points the way. Lantern follows.

Lost Garden, episode 2, 21 minutes, far above AAIFF's 3 minute floor and nowhere near the longest entry of 4 hours. Episode 1 was a finalist at the AI London Festival. The player opens on this scene.

The script

An 8 minute film in five movements.

AAIFF sets a floor of three minutes and no ceiling, and entries average about ten minutes. Aim for 8 minutes: 8 screenplay pages and 80 to 120 shots of 4 to 6 seconds.
  1. 0:00 to 0:40

    The future in one image

Show the world your film imagines in a single striking frame. Jurors see thousands of films.

  2. 0:40 to 2:00

    A person in that world

Who we follow and what they want. Best Character starts here.

  3. 2:00 to 5:30

    The crack

The world's promise fails them. Raise the cost with each scene, and keep to few locations.

  4. 5:30 to 7:00

    The decision

The character acts. This is where Best Direction is won.

  5. 7:00 to 8:00

    The echo

An image that answers the opening one, then credits and your AI disclosure.

Credit everyone and disclose the models and the pipeline on the form. Burn the English subtitles into the video: the rules say they must be included directly in it.

Month by month

From now to the next call.

No date is announced for 2027. In 2026 the call opened on 25 May. If the next one follows the same calendar, you have about eight months, and this plan counts from today.
  1. 01

    This week

    Watch the winners

Winners are due on 3 October. When they are public, watch the films, read what the jury says and note what the winners share. Learn from them, do not copy them.

  2. 02

    Month 1

    Competition and logline

Choose Thematic, Open or both. Write ten loglines, tell them to five people and keep the one they repeat back to you.

  3. 03

    Month 2

    Screenplay and lead character

Write the screenplay for free in ScreenWeaver. Best Character and Best Story are $50,000 each, so give the lead a want, a flaw and a face.

  4. 04

    Months 3 and 4

    Storyboard and references

Storyboard each shot, then approve references for characters and places. A visual language held across the film is what Best Visual rewards.

  5. 05

    Months 5 and 6

    Generate and edit

Generate scene by scene, then edit. Write down the models and the pipeline as you go, because the form asks you to disclose them.

  6. 06

    Month 7

    Subtitles, credits, upload

Burn English subtitles into the video and credit every contributor. Upload to YouTube with the hashtag in the description, or to Google Drive with view access for anyone with the link.

  7. 07

    When the call opens

    Submit early

Register each competition entry separately. Avoid the last 24 hours: about one film in seven arrived then last time.

Rejection traps

Eight lines in the rules that end a film's run.

Most of them are one line in the rules. Read them again when the next call opens.
  • AI as a finishing touch

Generative AI must be integral to creation, not only VFX or upscaling. A film that was shot and then upscaled is out.

  • Missing credits or disclosure

All contributors must be credited, and the models and the pipeline disclosed on submission.

  • Subtitles outside the video

English subtitles must be included directly in the video. A separate file does not meet that wording.

  • A YouTube link without the hashtag

Films uploaded to YouTube must carry #SpecialForAAIFF in the description, or they will not be considered. With Google Drive, set view access to anyone with the link.

  • An old film in the Thematic Competition

It is reserved for films created within the eligibility period and made in response to the theme. The site does not define the period, so ask the festival. Older films belong in the Open Competition.

  • One registration for two competitions

A film that goes into both sections must be registered separately in each.

  • A film under three minutes

Both competitions need three minutes or more.

  • Waiting for the last day

Entries after the deadline are considered only at the judges' discretion, and 1,189 films arrived in the last 24 hours. Submit a week early.

Why ScreenWeaver

AAIFF wants AI at the core. ScreenWeaver is built around it.

ScreenWeaver connects screenplay, storyboard and footage in a single project, for films and series alike. The festival imposes no tool, so the film is what counts.
  • AI inside the film, not on top

The rules want generative AI at the heart of the film. ScreenWeaver puts the shot breakdown, the storyboard and, with the Filmmaker plan, the Seedance footage in one project, so AI shapes the film from the first frame.

  • A disclosure that writes itself

The form asks for the models and the pipeline. When shots hang off scenes and storyboard frames, the disclosure is a summary of the project, not an investigation.

  • A face that holds

Best Character is a $50,000 award. A character approved once keeps the same face and costume in every shot, so minute one and minute eight match.

  • Eight months, starting free

The Screenwriter plan is $0, with no expiry, so the long wait before the call costs nothing. Storyboard Beta is $9.99 a month, and Seedance video generation comes with the Filmmaker plan, rolling out now.

Real productions

International festival-recognized films have been written and produced with ScreenWeaver.

ScreenWeaver is already being used as a creative workspace for real AI film productions, from cinematic shorts to animated series pilots selected, nominated, and awarded by international festivals.
