Runway is worth paying for if you make single shots, ads or music videos and you want the widest creative toolbox in one subscription. It is a weaker buy if you are trying to make a film. The credits run out fast, every failed take costs the same as a good one, and nothing in the product holds a screenplay. Check how many seconds your plan really buys before you subscribe.
If you are still comparing tools, our script-to-video tools comparison covers the field. The side-by-side table of Runway and ScreenWeaver is on the Runway alternative page. This review goes narrow: what each Runway plan buys in seconds of video, and what App Store reviewers complain about.
Every price and credit figure below comes from runway.com/pricing and from the Runway listing on the US App Store, both read on 27 October 2026.
The verdict
Runway has grown from a video model into a full creative suite. The current product centres on Runway Agent, a chat that plans a multi-shot project, generates the clips, adds music and voiceover and assembles a cut. Around it sit Runway's own models, Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0, partner models such as Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.0 Pro, image generation, 4K upscaling and audio tools.
That breadth is the reason to pick it. The cost model is the reason to be careful.
| You are | Best fit | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Testing the tools | Free | $0, 125 credits once |
| Making a few short clips a month | Standard | $15/mo, or $12/mo billed yearly |
| Producing ads or music videos weekly | Pro | $35/mo, or $28/mo billed yearly |
| Running a studio pipeline | Max | $95/mo, or $76/mo billed yearly |
| Writing and shooting a whole film | A script-first tool | See the verdict below |
The Runway iPhone app holds 4.5 out of 5 from about 19,000 ratings on the US App Store. That is a strong score, and the written reviews are more mixed than the number suggests.

What Runway does well

The agent is genuinely useful for short pieces. Give it a one-line idea and it drafts a plan, generates the shots, picks music and voice, and returns an assembled cut. For a 30-second spot or a social piece, that saves real hours.
Model choice in one place. Gen-4.5 for general shots, Aleph 2.0 for editing existing footage, plus Kling 4.0 and Seedance from partners. You do not need four subscriptions to compare four models.
References that persist. Images, videos and audio can be saved as references, called with @ in a prompt and shared with the team, which helps keep a product or a face stable across shots.
Finishing tools. 4K upscaling is included, unlimited on Pro and Max, and the Max plan adds HDR, ProRes and image sequence export. Few competitors at this price think about delivery formats at all.
Where Runway costs you
Credits disappear quickly. Runway publishes its costs per clip. Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits for 5 seconds, so 12 credits a second. Aleph 2.0 costs 140 credits for 5 seconds, or 28 a second. Kling 4.0 at 1080p is 89 credits for 5 seconds during a promotion that runs to 30 November, 118 at the regular rate. Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p is 160 credits for 4 seconds, 40 a second.
Failed takes are billed. This is the most common complaint in App Store reviews: every generation consumes credits, including the ones that ignore the prompt or come back distorted. One reviewer estimates that a 30 to 60 second video can run past $300 once rerolls are counted. Your own number will vary, but the logic holds: the price of a kept shot is the price of a take multiplied by the takes you throw away. We break that arithmetic down in the real cost of AI film credits and rerolls.
Prompt following is uneven. Several reviewers report that small edits to an earlier output are ignored or misread. Others describe results that drift from the brief.
No screenplay. The agent can draft a script in the chat, but there is no screenwriting editor and no Final Draft or Fountain import. A two-minute ad fits in a chat. A 90-page script does not.
Runway pricing 2026: what the credits buy

| Plan | Price | Credits | Gen-4.5 seconds | Aleph 2.0 seconds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 125, one time | about 10 | about 4 |
| Standard | $15/mo ($12 yearly) | 625/mo | about 52 | about 22 |
| Pro | $35/mo ($28 yearly) | 2,250/mo | about 187 | about 80 |
| Max | $95/mo ($76 yearly) | 9,500/mo | about 791 | about 339 |
Seconds are our arithmetic from Runway's published credits per clip, before any reroll. Storage is 5 GB on Free, 20 GB on Standard, 100 GB on Pro and 500 GB on Max.
In the iPhone app, Runway also sells credit packs: 1,000 credits for $10, up to 10,000 for $100. That puts Gen-4.5 at roughly $0.12 a second, or about $7.20 for a finished minute if every take works. Plan on two or three takes per kept shot and the figure for a minute of usable footage lands between $15 and $22 on Gen-4.5, and much higher on Aleph or the partner models.
The App Store lists slightly different subscription prices from the website: Standard at $14.99 a month or $143.99 a year, Pro at $35 and Max at $95 a month.

The rating is high, and the praise is real: people like the image quality, the range of models and the speed of the agent. The recurring complaints, in order of how often they appear:
- Credits spent on failed or unusable generations.
- Prompts and small edits not followed.
- Distorted or inconsistent results on some shots.
- Missing basic editing, such as removing audio or extending a clip.
- A paywall before seeing any sample output, and an agent that some feel pushes credit spending.
None of these are unusual for AI video. They matter more on Runway because its per-second costs sit at the top of the market for its own Aleph model and for the partner models.
Who should pick which plan
- Standard is a test bench. About 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month is enough to learn the tools, not to produce.
- Pro is the realistic tier for a freelancer making ads or music videos, with three minutes of Gen-4.5 before rerolls and unlimited 4K upscaling.
- Max makes sense for a team that delivers in HDR or ProRes and needs the volume.
- Free gives 125 credits once. Use them on Gen-4.5 to judge the quality before paying.
Alternatives worth checking
If your work is shot-based and fast, compare Runway with Kling for motion and Pika for effects and price. If you work from a brief on a shared board, look at Luma Dream Machine. If you publish explainers every week, invideo is built around a timeline editor.
Final verdict: Runway or ScreenWeaver?
Runway is the better pick for single shots, ads and music videos, where the agent, the model choice and the finishing tools pay for themselves. If your project starts from a screenplay, ScreenWeaver is the stronger fit. Writing is free on the Screenwriter plan, with PDF and Final Draft export. The Auteur plan, at $39.99 a month, generates the storyboard from your screenplay and runs Seedance 2.5, Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0 and other models on each shot, with your characters kept from shot to shot.
