The short answer: use ChatGPT as a writing partner, not as the writer. Go from idea to logline, from logline to a beat sheet, from beats to a scene list, then draft one scene at a time and rewrite in passes. Keep the script itself in a real screenplay editor. Connect ScreenWeaver to ChatGPT and the scenes it drafts land directly in your script, in proper format, instead of being copied and pasted back by hand.
Ask ChatGPT for "a screenplay about a lighthouse keeper" and you get three pages that read like every other AI script: on-the-nose dialogue, characters who explain their feelings, an ending that wraps up too neatly. That is not because ChatGPT cannot help. It is because one prompt asked it to do every job at once. A script is built in layers, and ChatGPT is good at each layer when you give it one at a time.
Before you start: what ChatGPT is good at, and what it is not
| Good at | Weak at |
|---|---|
| Generating many options fast (titles, loglines, twists) | Picking the right one: that is your job |
| Spotting structure problems in an outline | Subtext: it tends to say what characters feel |
| Rewriting a scene in a given tone or length | Holding a 100-page script in mind at once |
| Playing a character so you can test a voice | Original specifics from your own life |
| Checking continuity when it can read the whole script | Screenplay formatting once you paste it back |
The method below plays to the left column and keeps you in charge of the right one.
Step 1: from idea to logline
Give ChatGPT your raw idea and ask for options, not an answer.
I have an idea for a short film: a lighthouse keeper on a remote island finds a message in a bottle addressed to her, dated forty years in the future. Give me 10 loglines, each under 35 words, each with a clear protagonist, goal and obstacle. Vary the genre: drama, thriller, comedy, fantasy.
Pick one, or merge two. Then push back: "What is the weakest part of this logline?" Our Logline Workshop is a free way to test the result.
Step 2: from logline to beats
Now the structure. Ask for a beat sheet in a framework you know, and give the length.
Build a beat sheet for this logline, for a 12-page short film. Use 8 beats. For each beat: page range, what happens, what the protagonist wants in that moment, and what changes by the end of it.
Read it as an editor would. Where does the middle sag? Where is the turn too convenient? Ask ChatGPT to argue against its own outline: "Give me three ways the second half could surprise the audience more." For a feature, the Beat Sheet Calculator puts the classic beats on the right pages.
Step 3: from beats to a scene list
Turn each beat into scenes, with a heading and one sentence each.
Turn these beats into a scene list. For each scene: the scene heading (INT. or EXT., place, time of day), the characters present and one sentence on what the scene must achieve. Keep it to 14 scenes at most.
This list is your map. Every later request refers to it ("draft scene 6"), which keeps ChatGPT anchored.
Step 4: draft one scene at a time
Never ask for the whole script. Ask for one scene, with context and constraints.
Draft scene 6 in screenplay format. Context: Mara has just read the bottle's message and does not believe it. Her brother Tom arrives by boat with supplies. Goal of the scene: she hides the message from him, and we feel she is lying. Constraints: under 2 pages, no character says what they feel, at least one action line that shows the lie.
The constraint "no character says what they feel" does more for your dialogue than any adjective. Ask for two versions of the scenes that matter and keep the best lines of each.
Step 5: rewrite in passes
Once you have a full draft, rewrite with one goal per pass, never "make it better":
- Dialogue pass: "Cut every line that explains what the audience already sees."
- Character pass: "Rewrite Tom's lines so he sounds like a man who has worked on boats for twenty years."
- Pace pass: "This scene runs 3 pages. Bring it to 2 without losing the reveal."
- Continuity pass: "List every mention of the bottle and check that what each character knows stays consistent."
The last pass is where a plain chat struggles: it can only check what you pasted into it.

Start FreeThe real problem: getting the script out of the chat
Everything above works in any ChatGPT conversation. The pain starts when you have 14 scenes spread across a long chat. You copy each scene into a screenplay editor, the formatting breaks, character names drift (TOM in one scene, TOMMY in another), and the next time you ask for a rewrite you paste the scene again.
That is the gap ScreenWeaver's MCP closes. Once ScreenWeaver is connected to ChatGPT:
- ChatGPT writes the scenes straight into your ScreenWeaver script, as real screenplay elements: headings, action, cues, dialogue.
- It reads any scene of the script when you ask for a rewrite, so you never paste it again.
- It searches the whole script for the continuity pass, across every scene.
- The version before each change is saved to History, and deletions need your confirmation.
- When the script is ready, it can break a scene into storyboard shots in the same project.
You keep writing by hand in the ScreenWeaver editor whenever you want, with industry formatting and Final Draft export. The screenwriting with ChatGPT page has the full setup.
How to connect ScreenWeaver to ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps, and turn on Developer mode in the advanced settings.
- Click Create, name the app ScreenWeaver, paste
https://app.screenweaver.ai/api/mcpand choose OAuth. - Sign in to ScreenWeaver, pick the projects ChatGPT may open, and allow.
- In a conversation, pick ScreenWeaver from the tools menu and ask: "Create a new film project called The Keeper and write scene 1 from my scene list."
Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom app changes often, and so do the menu names. If you do not see Developer mode, check OpenAI's help center for your plan. The same server works in Claude: see screenwriting with Claude, and our plain guide to what an MCP server is.
Common mistakes
- Accepting the first draft. The first answer is the average answer. Ask for options, then choose.
- Prompting with adjectives. "Make it more emotional" gives you speeches. Constraints ("under a page", "no one says I love you") give you scenes.
- Losing the thread. Keep the scene list as the single reference, and name scenes by number in every request.
- Letting ChatGPT pick the ending. Ask it for five endings, then write your own, informed by them.

FAQ
Can ChatGPT write a whole screenplay?
It can produce one, but the result is generic when it is asked in one go. You get a much better script by working in layers: logline, beats, scene list, one scene at a time, then rewrite passes, with you making the choices.
Can ChatGPT format a screenplay correctly?
Inside the chat, it gets close, and the formatting breaks when you paste it into another app. With ScreenWeaver connected, ChatGPT writes the scenes into a real screenplay editor as proper elements, so there is nothing to reformat.
Is a script written with ChatGPT mine?
Check the current terms of OpenAI and the rules of the festival, contest or guild you are dealing with. Most writers use ChatGPT for options and feedback and write the final words themselves, which keeps the work clearly theirs.
Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan to connect ScreenWeaver?
Adding a custom app depends on your ChatGPT plan and changes over time; OpenAI's help center has the current list. On the ScreenWeaver side, the MCP is part of the Auteur and Studio plans, and writing in the script editor is free on every plan.
Can ChatGPT create the storyboard too?
With ScreenWeaver connected, yes for the shots: it reads a scene and creates the storyboard shots with framing, camera movement and duration. You generate the panel images in the app.
