0:04The vertical short drama is the fastest growing format in the world. Episodes of about a minute, filmed in 9x16, watched on a phone by someone who can leave with one swipe. Writing for it has its own rules.

0:19Here's our example. The Other Nora. A woman comes home, her key doesn't turn, and the door opens on a woman with her exact face. Three episodes of 60 seconds written in Screenweaver in an episodical project.

0:35Rule 1. The hook lives in the first three seconds. Not the first scene, the first three seconds. A key that won't turn. A visible problem, not a mood. On a phone, nobody waits for the story to start.

0:50Rule 2. One episode, one turn. 60 seconds have room for exactly one change. In episode 1, the door opening on her own face. Everything before builds the question, everything after makes it worse.

1:06Rule 3. Four beats of about 15 seconds. The hook, the escalation, the turn, and the cliffhanger. In the outline, that's four story beats per episode, each one becoming a single scene.

1:21Rule 4. End on a question. Episode 1 ends on a text from a contact named me. Don't knock again. Episode 2 on four words. You died yesterday. Every ending gives the viewer a reason to swipe to the next episode.

1:38Rule 5. Write for faces and short lines. On a vertical screen, a close -up fills the whole phone. Dialogue rarely goes beyond eight words a line, because each scene is a clip of about 15 seconds.

1:53In Screenweaver, that's an episodical project. Four beats per episode, labelled with their roll, and very short scenes. The same tools, a different clock.

2:04In the outline, label the four beats of each episode the same way, every time. The hook as opening slash setup, the escalation as rising action, the turn as plot point one, and the cliffhanger with tension slash suspense. Read the whole season on the beat track, and you'll see instantly if an episode is missing its turn or its ending.

2:25If you want to go further, my free course, Make a Vertical Short Drama with AI, covers the whole production of The Other Nora. Your exercise. Outline a three -episode short drama with a hook, a turn, and a cliffhanger in each. Next, what changes when your script will be produced with AI? Bye.
