The Compass

0:04Let's put everything together. In this lecture, we write one full scene of the night ferry, live, from the outline cards to the last line of dialogue, and I'll tell you why I make each choice. The scene, interior, the ferry cabin, night, later. The beats, who are you, and the compass.
0:24Start from the outline. The two cards tell us what must happen. Elias demands an answer, she refuses, and then the compass reveals the truth. Everything we write has to serve those two moments. Anything else, we cut.
0:38The heading, interior, the ferry cabin, night, later. Same place as scene too, so the same name, the ferry cabin. And later, because time has passed since the engine came back to life.
0:50First action line. What's the first image? We've just seen Elias stare at her on the deck, so now the tension in his body. Elias grips the wheel. His jaw is tight. Two short sentences. We feel his anger without a word.
1:07Now the dialogue. He speaks first, because he's the one who needs answers. Who taught you that? Notice he doesn't ask, who are you, yet. He builds up to it. She answers sideways. Someone who talked to his engines. It's an answer and a clue at the same time.
1:24Then the direct question, the low point. Who are you? Three words. And here's a choice. She doesn't answer with words. We write it as action. She doesn't answer. She opens her hand. A small brass compass, engraved E to M.
1:42Why an object? Because the audience can see it. And because we planted it. In scene two, she watched him tap his own compass twice before every turn. So when she sets hers next to his, two identical compasses, the audience understands before Elias says anything. That's the payoff of a set -up.
2:01And the reaction is physical. Elias' hand trembles. Then just one word. Her name. Maya. And her answer, the shortest line of the film. Hi, Dad. We stop there. No hug. No explanation. The next scene, at dawn, will show us the rest.
2:21Read it back. Half a page. Two beats. One twist. Every line moves the story or reveals a character. That's the standard to aim for in every scene you write.
2:33Your exercise? Pick one beat of your outline, write its scene from scratch, and for every line, ask yourself why it's there. Then take the section quiz. In the next section, we bring in the AI assistant.
