0:04A story beat is a moment where something changes. A decision, a discovery, a reversal. If nothing changes, it isn't a beat. It's just time passing. A good story is a chain of beats, and each one makes the next one necessary.
0:21A beat is not the same as a scene. One beat can take several scenes, like a chase in three places. And one scene can hold several beats, like a dinner where a secret comes out and a couple breaks up. Beats are moments of change, scenes are places and times. The outline helps you see both.
0:41In Screenweaver, every story beat can carry labels. Nine of them describe the classic structure of a story, in order. Let's go through them with The Night Ferry as the example.
0:53Act 1, The Setup. Opening, or set up, we meet the protagonist and their ordinary world, flaws included. Elias closes the last crossing, alone, and refuses passengers after midnight. The inciting incident, the event that shatters the status quo. Maya runs down the jetty and begs to cross. Plot point one, the point of no return. He lets her on, and the story can't go back.
1:20Act 2, The Confrontation. Rising action. Obstacles pile up and the goal gets harder. The fog swallows the shore. The midpoint. A twist. A false victory, or a false defeat, that raises the stakes. The engine dies, and Maya fixes it. The way only someone he taught could. The low point. The moment furthest from the goal. The all is lost. Who are you? And she doesn't answer.
1:48Plot point two, the epiphany. New information that propels us into the last act. She sets a brass compass next to his. Two identical compasses. Act 3, The Resolution. The Climax. The ultimate confrontation with the main obstacle. For Elias, the obstacle was never the fog, it was the past. Maya. Hi Dad. And the Resolution. The Aftermath. A new status quo. Dawn. The Harbour. And a photo turned face up.
2:20Where do these beats fall? In a feature film, as a rough guide. The inciting incident around 10 % of the story. Plot point one, around a quarter. The midpoint at half. The low point and plot point two, around three quarters. And the climax near the end. These are not laws. They're a compass. And most stories that work fall somewhere near them.
2:44The four other labels describe the tone of a beat, not its position. Action or kinetic, for chases and fights. Tension or suspense, for build -up and mystery. Comedy or levity, for jokes and relief. And heart, or emotional, for vulnerable moments, love and grief. The engine dying is midpoint and tension. The compass is plot point two and heart.
3:10A beat can carry up to three labels. And you're not stuck with these. Managed labels lets you add your own, like twist or flashback, for the patterns of your genre.
3:22Why bother? Because labels make the shape of your story visible. Look at your outline. If the inciting incident is on page 30, the audience is bored. If there's no heart label anywhere, the story may be cold. If three tension beats follow each other, maybe one needs a breath.
3:41The beat sheet in the resources lists all 13 labels with their descriptions. Next, we use them to build the full outline of the night ferry.
